Most staircase openings just get whatever railing is cheapest and easiest to throw in. That works fine if you don't care about what the space looks like - but when you've put real effort into a home, a generic railing sticks out like a sore thumb. That's exactly the kind of problem we love solving.
This Northfield home needed a railing that could guard a open stairwell without closing off the space or clashing with the interior. The homeowners had clean lines, light hardwood floors, and a modern-rustic feel throughout. So we built a custom horizontal bar railing in flat black steel to match it all. Sturdy square posts, flush base plates anchored right into the floor, and evenly spaced horizontal bars running the full length of the opening.
What makes horizontal railings work so well in a space like this is the openness. You still get a full view across the room - the windows, the entryway, the decor on the wall - nothing gets boxed in. But the railing is doing its job. It's solid, it doesn't flex, and it's not going anywhere. That's the balance we aim for on every custom piece we build.
The finish matters just as much as the structure. A matte black powder coat keeps it looking sharp without being flashy, and it holds up a lot better than paint over time. No flaking, no rust spots showing up a few years down the road. It also ties right into the black window frames and door hardware already in the home, which makes the whole space feel more intentional.
Whether it's a home stairwell, a loft opening, or a shop - if you need custom metalwork that actually fits the space, we can build it. We handle everything in-house, from the design to the final install.
